Welcome to join the SAFER seminar! We are happy to offer the opportunity to learn from Prof. Chris Cherry is a Professor in Civil Engineering at the University of Tennessee, while he is visiting Chalmers for Alexander Rasch upcoming dissertation in February. Prof. Marco Dozza, Chalmers University, is hosting the seminar.

Abstract
E-scooters launched in many North American cities with little warning or preparation. In some ways, this was a necessary approach as it forced regulatory bodies to react quickly (i.e., define the vehicles and regulate them). On the other hand, few cities were prepared to achieve so many of their non-motorized growth goals so quickly, even if the form was different than imagined. Suddenly, cities saw of thousands of novice riders making millions of trips. In many cities, incremental gains in cycling and associated infrastructure quickly revealed their deficiencies. Soon, injury and fatality reports dominated the media and scooter safety became one of the hottest topics in the non-motorized policy realm. This seminar provides a background of e-scooter safety in the USA and describes two studies that dive into police crash and behavioral datasets to understand where, why, and when e-scooter crashes are happening. Much of the work is specifically linked to Nashville TN but it includes applications elsewhere. The work here can generate policy discussions on identifying the correct targets for safety improvements in the transportation system and how e-scooters fit into that vision.
