Suicide in the Transport system
Speaker: Anna-Lena Andersson, Suicide and suicide prevention, The Swedish Transport Administration
Every suicide is a tragedy. The impact of the families, friends and communities is devastating. Many sectors in the society, not only the health care, must try to think off and work with suicide prevention, as suicides are preventable. Each year there are approximately 1 500 suicides deaths in Sweden in all methods. Of these about 130 suicides, occur in the transport system.
More than one third of all the fatalities in the transport system in Sweden, are suicides. The transport related suicides occurred most frequently in association to railway and metro systems, followed by road traffic and jumping from bridges. Besides the personal tragedies, suicides can also be a work environment problem for drivers, first responders and service personal. It causes delays in goods and for passengers and entails costs for transport operators and society. Restrictions of the access to suicide methods in the form of different physical barriers is a promising approach for prevention.
