Workshop on Cognitive Work Analysis (CWA) and Ecological Interface Design (EID)
Ecological interface design (EID) is an approach to interface design based on the skills, rules, and knowledge taxonomy of cognitive control. The basic goals of EID are not to force processing to a higher level than the demands of the task require, and to support each of the three levels of cognitive control. Thus, an EID interface should not contribute to the difficulty of the task, and at the same time, it should support the entire range of activities that "operators" will be faced with. It has been applied to different domains, in particular domains characterised by a more complex human-machine-interaction situation.
The workshop will be run by Professor Neville A. Stanton from University of Southampton, UK. This two day workshop will introduce the ideas behind CWA and EID to those new to the area. The emphasis will be on practice guidance and advice with plenty of hands-on experience.
The first day will be dedicated to explaining the five phases of CWA through the CWA software tool that Professor Stanton helped to develop. The theory, method and software tool are intertwined. The software will be provided to all delegates. They will need a laptop computer running Windows. Delegates may form teams of two or three as they wish. Delegates will be expected to construct the analysis under guidance during the workshop.
The second day will introduce the ideas behind EID and present examples from the presenter's own work, as well as from the work of others. As with the first day, delegates will be expected to construct their own EIDs under guidance. There will be opportunity for delegates to present their work to the whole group and discuss their challenges and insights.
You are all most welcome!
