The introduction of a new legal requirement on 23 December 2023 made motor insurance mandatory for certain e-scooters in Sweden. In this study, claims involving e-scooters, e-bikes, and class II mopeds from 2022 to May 2026 were analyzed by crash type, contributing factors, and injury outcomes.

Insurance-based crash data provided a complementary perspective on e-scooter crashes by identifying incidents involving privately owned vehicles with third-party liability insurance. Despite representing a narrowly defined group of privately owned, traffic-insured vehicles, the study sample included a substantial proportion of moderate-to-severe injuries. Treatment outside hospitals covered by STRADA suggests that some injury cases may be underrepresented in official statistics. The observed prevalence of single-vehicle crashes suggests a need for preventive measures that improve riders’ ability to control their vehicles across different road-surface conditions and in interactions with other road users, alongside measures aimed at avoiding collisions.
