New SAFER partner project to improve the design of speed-reducing measures on rural roads
How should speed-reducing measures on rural roads be designed to truly improve safety? A new research project from Lund University aims to find out.
Building on a previous study that analysed 34 different speed-reducing designs in southern Sweden using drone footage and video tracking, the project will now take a deeper look into why some solutions work better than others. The earlier study found significant differences in effectiveness – even among similar designs.
This follow-up project will explore both technical factors, such as road width, curvature and speed limits, and psychological aspects, like how the road environment is perceived by drivers.
The goal is to generate new insights and design guidelines to help make rural traffic calming measures more effective and improve safety outcomes.
- Project duration: 2024–2025
- Funded by: Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket)
- Partner: Lund University
- Contact: Carl Johnsson
At SAFER, we look forward to learning from the results and supporting the knowledge exchange on safer rural road design.
