Breakfast event: Defining Safe System Guidelines for Motorcycle Safety Worldwide
Reaching global and national targets to halve road traffic deaths and serious injuries requires major reductions in motorcycle casualties, which make up 20–80% of fatalities worldwide. While stakeholders recognize the need for Safe System principles for motorcyclists, these are not yet clearly defined. Vision Zero and the Safe System Approach emphasizes aligning infrastructure and speed with human crash tolerance. Recent research has established tolerance levels for motorcyclists in various crash types, marking a first step toward such principles. However, these needs adapting into global guidelines that reflect different motorcycle uses—from recreation in Northern Europe to mixed use in Southern Europe and primary transport in countries like Malaysia.
The SAFER project Safe System Principles for motorcycles, bring together global experts with the aim to define, validate, and implement such principles. The initial phase, funded by the Swedish Transport Administration, aims to set maximum safe travel speeds for common crash types in different regions of the world and translate them into context-specific infrastructure design principles.
This event will bring together the experts in the project for a panel discussion on the progress of the project but also on what they see as the most prioritised actions to reduce motorcycle trauma in their part of the world.
