Welcome to a SAFER Seminar with presentation by SAFER International Scientific Advisory Board member, Joseph Kanianthra
, on current and past research activities!

Joseph Kanianthra is President of Active Safety Engineering LLC and Former Associate Administrator for Vehicle Safety Research (Retired) at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, U.S. Department of Transportation.

There is much discussion among vehicle manufacturers, academic researchers and the developers of technologies that the answer to the safety problems that are prevalent in the field today, in industrialized nations, can only be addressed through connectivity and autonomous operation of vehicles. However, there has been very little progress in the real world as far as deployment is concerned of even less complex technologies throughout the vehicle fleet in many jurisdictions. There are many underlying reasons for this. At the same time there is no clear understanding of what connectivity means and what its implications are. Connectivity means different things to different people. Autonomy also is being interpreted differently by different proponents of autonomy to suit different purposes. The presentation and the discussion in the seminar is intended to examine the implications of connectivity and autonomy on safety and also to discuss the hurdles in implementation of these technologies, their potential benefits and the possibility of wide spread acceptance by consumers.

Speaker: Joseph N. Kanianthra, Ph.D. (Mech. Eng.), President, Active Safety Engineering LLC

Host:  Anna Nilsson-Ehle, Director, SAFER
