Heavy Automated Vehicle Operation Center (HAVOC) - Requirements and HMI design

This project addresses a portion of numerous human behavior challenges identified in a recent SAFER-prestudy (Human factors related to remote control of automated heavy vehicles). The aim is to compare and contrast different needs and requirements posed on the human operator and HAV in remote operation applications: assessment, assistance and emergency driving.

The goal of the HAVOC project was to explore remote control and monitoring of heavy vehicles. This has been achieved by developing a simulator platform and prototype. The user test with fifteen participants has contributed to the development of guidelines for remote control and monitoring. The platform can also be used further in future studies. The HAVOC project has also contributed to the FFI goals through knowledge development that has been communicated to other actors, through networking and dissemination nationally and internationally.

Human factors and HMI requirements were elicited in a user study by the development of the HAVOC simulator platform and simulated operator tasks for remote assessment, remote assistance, and remote driving. The results show the importance of taking a systems perspective in the development and implementation of remote operation control centers. Aspects such as the operational context, control modes, vehicle capabilities, operator tasks, HMI, and organization of work have to be considered in parallel to ensure operational safety and performance.

Initially, a series of stakeholder workshops were held to define the scope and use cases in the project. The HAVOC simulator was developed implementing the use cases in a Unity game engine with corresponding 3D-world and operator HMI to enable exploration of remote operation of ten vehicles in parallel. In the user study, 15 participants were invited to work for 1.5 hours and evaluate the system and work in terms of human-automation interaction.
