Full title: Towards a driver behavioural point of no return (Modellering av förarbeteendedefinierad "point of no return")
This pre-study investigates the concept of a behavioural point of no return—the point at which a driver can no longer reasonably be expected to avoid a crash due to physical or cognitive limitations. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Automated Driving Systems (ADS) increasingly support drivers in safety-critical situations, yet intervention timing is often based on vehicle capabilities rather than human limits, potentially reducing both safety and user acceptance. Using real-world driving and crash data, the study will assess the feasibility of quantifying human physical and cognitive limits and explore how such models could inform future ADAS design, ADS evaluation, and safety assessment.
Traffic safety benefit: Improved crash avoidance and injury mitigation through intervention strategies calibrated to empirically observed human capabilities rather than vehicle capabilities alone.
