TWINSAFE added to the SAFER portfolio: Advancing road safety through twinning

Sep, 12 2024

The TWINSAFE project is designed to significantly improve road safety research at the University of Zagreb through collaboration with Lund University and Hasselt University. Focusing on how road infrastructure impacts driver behavior, the project integrates advanced data analytics, simulation, and end-user feedback to recommend infrastructure improvements based on the Safe System Approach. By combining GIS-informed metrics with driver behavior data, it will deliver actionable insights into traffic safety on rural roads.

Key deliverables and impacts

  1. Infrastructure recommendations and road safety enhancement: TWINSAFE will analyze how road infrastructure affects driver behavior, resulting in targeted recommendations for safety improvements. This will contribute to a deeper understanding of infrastructure’s role in traffic safety, providing replicable solutions that support the European culture of road safety.

  2. Capacity building, technology transfer, and long-term collaboration: By strengthening research capabilities and fostering innovation, TWINSAFE will enhance institutional excellence. The project will create a sustainable framework that bridges academia, industry, and government, paving the way for innovative road safety solutions and long-term partnerships.

  3. International knowledge transfer and broader European R&I contribution: Through expertise dissemination and accreditation programs, TWINSAFE will promote cross-border collaboration, sharing road safety insights with key institutions across Europe. The project will serve as a model for other European nations, particularly in widening countries, by contributing to the broader European research and innovation ecosystem.

  4. Commercial and educational growth: The collaboration between academic institutions and industry will facilitate the commercialization of road safety innovations and contribute to the development of joint educational curricula. This approach will open new career pathways, ensuring both academic and practical business needs are addressed effectively.
