SAFER Thursday lunch seminar: Status update about the IGLAD database
Welcome to hear from Ines Heinig from SAFER on the Status update about the IGLAD database (initiative for the global harmonization of accident data).
Thorough crash investigations are the basis for research and legislation in traffic accident safety. Many countries around the world have established systems to collect samples of in-depth accident data, which contains detailed information about:
- Vehicles
- Environment
- Personal injuries
- Anthropometric data
- Accident mechanics
- Event data e.g. from crash recorders
- Full accident reconstruction of each traffic accident
They complement general accident statistics which are collected on a national level, such as the total number of fatalities and injured.
IGLAD is the "Initiative for the Global Harmonization of (in-depth) Accident Data" and is the only continuous international effort to provide a database of in-depth accident data from different countries around the world within a unified data scheme. Data from traffic safety researchers from Europe, North America, South America, Asia, and Australia is merged on a yearly basis into the IGLAD database. It also offers a platform for accident researchers worldwide to communicate and share experiences and knowledge around accident research. The non-profit project is completely self-funded and offers its data to interested parties to be used for research purposes charging a moderate membership fee.
