SHAPE-IT - Human Factors for automated vehicles in cities of the future
Coordinator: Jonas Bärgman, Associate Professor, Vehicle Safety Division, Chalmers University of Technology

SHAPE-IT is a European Commission Marie Curie project with 14 PhD students (early-stage researchers; ESRs) across six European universities that perform research on a variety of aspects of human factors for automated vehicles (AVs) in cities of the future. See publications so far here. The focus of the project is both the users of the AVs and road-user outside of the AVs. The PhD students research topics range from design strategies for internal and external human machine interfaces (HMIs; as for the latter, e.g., how to communicate with cyclist and how to design augmented reality for pedestrians to convey AV intent), via methods for measuring perceived safety, how to assess transparency of AV capabilities, how to design of acceptable AV kinematics,  and the development of computational models of AV-to-vulnerable-road-user-interaction, to research on how to communicate human factors knowledge to AV engineers in an agile work process and how to predict pedestrian movements from AV sensors using machine learning.
