New EU-approved project paves the way for the next big step in road safety
We can now add a new partner project to the SAFER portfolio, with a clear focus on the future of road safety. The European Commission has approved a Coordination Support Action within Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility, involving a wide range of SAFER partners. The project sets the scene for an upcoming large-scale demonstration planned towards the end of the current Horizon Europe program, with the aim of submitting a larger project proposal in October 2026.
This is not “just” another project. It is a preparatory step that helps ensure the next major demo is sharp, comparable, and genuinely useful for improving safety in real-world traffic. The preparation focuses on three elements that often determine whether a demonstration is simply talked about or becomes a real game changer:
- Methodology and evaluation tools to make sure we measure the right things, in the right way
- A demonstration plan that takes us from idea to something that can actually be deployed
- Communication strategies so results can be understood, shared, and put into practice
Why does this matter so much? Because demonstrations are where technology, people, and the transport system meet for real. It is where we move from “this should work” to “this works, and we can prove it”. And that is exactly where road safety gains can become concrete, traceable, and ready to scale.
The Swedish activities are supported by the Drive Sweden-funded project CCAM Sweden, and SAFER partners involved in the CSA include RISE, VTI, Volvo Group, TRATON/Scania, Aptiv, Magna, Volvo Cars, and Trafikverket.
