New SAFER partner project: I-AIMS2 – Towards safer and more human-centred mobility
We are pleased to welcome I-AIMS2 – Impairment-Aware Intelligent Mobility System 2, a new partner project exploring how driver safety, well-being, and fuel efficiency can be enhanced through the use of artificial intelligence.
Led by the University of Gothenburg in collaboration with Smart Eye AB, the project develops and tests a new driver support system called Sheila-Guard – a large language model (LLM) with voice feedback that can detect the driver’s state and help regulate stress, fatigue, and attention. The system aims to understand how the driver feels and provide adaptive, real-time feedback to reduce risky situations.
Throughout the project, Sheila-Guard will be tested in both a driving simulator and a physical demonstrator vehicle, as researchers study how the technology affects driver behaviour, attention, and decision-making. The goal is to define safe operational boundaries for AI-based in-vehicle assistance systems.
SAFER will contribute by using its collaboration platform to host expert workshops, ensuring that the project benefits from the network’s broad expertise and that the results can be further strengthened and shared. Knowledge generated within the project will be disseminated through SAFER’s ecosystem, supporting learning and progress across partners and sectors.
The project strongly supports the Vision Zero approach – that no one should be killed or seriously injured in traffic – and highlights how collaboration and human-centred research can drive real impact in future mobility.
We wish the project team the very best of success with this important work!
