Depot for electrified and automated buses

This feasibility study explores the technical and organizational conditions for automating bus depots with infrastructure-based automation technology and standardized ISO interfaces instead of vehicle-based technology. The project is coordinated by RISE, with Nobina AB and Unikie AB as partners. Nobina AB provides a depot in Katrineholm, while Unikie AB supplies the third-party technology. RISE investigates changes that follow with automated buses in depots in terms of work organization, roles, safety routines and required competences. Legal and regulation matters are also investigated. The results aim to promote standardization, brand-neutral solutions and new working methods. The feasibility will also develop a plan for a full-scale pilot at one of Nobina’s bus depots.

Traffic safety benefit: Automated buses at depots can reduce the risk of accidents by coordinated movements, precise maneuvering and consistent operations, which also can reduce the likelihood of collisions and damages.

Key words: Automation, infrastructure-based technology, work organization, regulations
