Welcome to the 8th International Conference on Driver Distraction and Inattention (DDI2022), which will be arranged as a hybrid conference with the possibility to join online and physically in Gothenburg, Sweden, October 19-20, 2022.

The conference is designed to bring participants – from academia, industry and government – up-to-date on the developments and trends in the field of inattention and distraction in driving. The conference features keynote speakers, plenary and parallel sessions, poster exhibition and a panel dialogue with various experts, representing various disciplines in this line of research. Networking is also an important part of the conference and we are looking forward to host the most recent and relevant research dialogue together with experts from all around the world to move forward with our common challenge to save lives in traffic.

DDI2022 follows the highly successful DDI Conferences held previously in Gothenburg, Sweden (2009, 2011, 2013, 2018), Sydney, Australia (2015), France (2017). The conference in 2021 was held online. 

The overall theme for DDI2022 is “Safety assessment of human interactions with vehicles and automotive technologies in the context of driver distraction and inattention”.

This theme targets research on how to assess the safety impact of driver distraction and inattention. For example, how can human-machine interface designs be quantitatively assessed with respect to safety? What are the differences and requirements of such assessment in development, compliance assessment and consumer rating? How can the safety of disconnected drivers be assessed? How can driver monitoring be used as a facilitator of safety assessment of driver distraction and inattention? How can experiments, simulations, and models of behaviors be used to assess the safety of driver distraction and inattention – individually or in combination? How can the combination of behaviors and automation technologies be assessed in combination? Which are the most appropriate safety assessment metrics? We encourage theme-related research both on methods for safety assessment and results of such assessment. There will be key-note speakers related to the theme. Although we specifically promote these topics for this year’s conference, any high-quality contribution within the conference general scope is most welcome.

The conference is hosted and co-organised by the SAFER Vehicle and Traffic Safety Centre at Chalmers in Sweden, the Université Gustave Eiffel, France and the University of New South Wales, Australia. All conference papers will be peer-reviewed by at least two international experts on driver distraction and inattention, all of whom are members of the conference’s Scientific Committee. We co-operate with the scientific journal Transportation Research Part F: Traffic Psychology and Behaviour and the most interesting scientific contributions will be invited to publish a full paper in a special issue.
