Road Safety for the International Business Traveler
A Conference for Occupational Physicians, Safety Managers and Policymakers
Organized by the Department of Public Health, University of Gothenburg in cooperation with the World Bank Group (WBG), and SAFER Vehicle and Traffic Safety Center at Chalmers.
The aim of the conference is to review road safety from the aspects of the quality of roads, cars, and drivers with a focus on developing countries, and to discuss corporate travel policies and how they can be tailored to avoid collisions and serious injuries among business travelers.
Questions to be Addressed at the Conference:
Epidemiology
How has Sweden dramatically reduced the number road deaths? What works? What lies ahead? How is road safety in the European countries? How is China, a major business country, managing road safety? Is there any specific advice for the business traveler?
The Car
How has car safety developed over time and what lies ahead? Why should I choose to ride in a newer car? Some checkpoints.
The Driver
What medical illnesses put drivers at an increased risk for accidents? Medical check-ups for the driver license - what lies ahead? How is safe driving affected by fatigue, cell-phone use, speeding, lack of judgment, and lack of attention by the driver? What can I do about it?
The Road
What is the role the road and climate- surface, lanes, weather, visibility, day-night driving, tires with and without rods in the winter? What should I plan and watch for?
Medical Emergency Service
Car crashes in developing countries- how can I be prepared? Communication, ambulance and need for medical evacuation to center of excellence.
Policies and Practices
What are the role of public policies such as traffic signs, speed limits, camera surveillance, and police enforcement for safe driving? Where can I get country-specific road safety information? Examples of corporate travel policies -- what works? What doesn't work? Does a company need a special traffic incident reporting system?
