The International Conference on Driver Distraction and Inattention

Date
22-24 October 2026
Place
Lindholmen Science Park, Gothenburg

Save the date! We are excited to announce that the 10th edition of the International Conference on Driver Distraction and Inattention (DDI) will be held in Gothenburg October 20-22, 2026 to celebrate our milestone anniversary! This will be the sixth time the conference takes place at SAFER’s home base, Lindholmen Science Park, Sweden’s leading hub for future mobility.

The conference will continue to focus on sharing and discussing the latest research on driver distraction and inattention, as well as the measures that need to be implemented to tackle these issues. DDI welcomes participants from academia, industry, policy, and practice - anyone dedicated to improving traffic safety is invited to join this vital conversation.

What to expect: DDI is designed to bring participants—academics, industry professionals, and policymakers—up to speed with the latest developments and trends in road user distraction and inattention. The program will feature keynote speakers, plenary and parallel sessions, a poster exhibition, and expert panel dialogues. Networking is a key part of the event, and we are excited to facilitate collaboration between experts from around the world to address the challenges posed by driver distraction and ultimately save lives.

Scope of research: The conference covers a wide range of topics, from theories and measurement of inattention to crash risks and mitigation strategies. While the main focus is on driver distraction, we also welcome research on other road users, such as pedestrians, cyclists, and users of transport modes like electric scooters. Practical aspects of distraction and inattention—such as education, road design, legislation, and stakeholder coordination are also within the scope of the conference.

Exclusive publishing opportunities: All conference abstracts will undergo a review process by at least two international experts in the field, all members of our Scientific Committee. Selected authors of top abstracts and presentations will be invited to submit a full paper for a special issue of a high-impact scientific journal. More information and call for abstracts will be sent out in 2025.

DDI 2026 follows a legacy of successful conferences held in Gothenburg (2009, 2011, 2013, 2018, 2022), Sydney (2015), Paris (2017), online (2021), and Ann Arbor (2024). Today, the conference plays a pivotal role in advancing research on driver distraction and is held biennially in even years.

Organisers and hosts: DDI conferences are co-organized by SAFER Vehicle and Traffic Safety Centre at Chalmers, Chalmers University of Technology, Université Gustave Eiffel in France, and University of New South Wales Sydney in Australia. The conference co-chairs, Dr. Alexandra Fort and Dr. Christophe Jallais from Université Gustave Eiffel, Dr. Jonas Bärgman from SAFER at Chalmers University, and Emeritus Prof. Michael Regan from University of New South Wales Sydney, are all thrilled to welcome you to this important international road safety event in Gothenburg 2026!

See you at Lindholmen Science Park in October 2026!
