The 2nd International Conference on Driver Distraction and Inattention (Sept 5-7, 2011) is linked to this special workshop titled "Investigating Driver Distraction and Inattention Using Naturalistic Driving Data", run by Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI).

This full day workshop will present methods for analyzing driver distraction and inattention using existing naturalistic driving data.

Topics will include:

1) reviewing video of safety-critical events (e.g., crashes and near-crashes) experienced by drivers performing real-world driving without an experimenter in their vehicle, 2) coding driver distraction and inattention, 3) designing driver distraction and inattention experiments (case-control vs. case-crossover studies), 4) sampling baseline data (how many samples and based on what criteria), 5) computing odds ratios and population attributable risk, and 6) the challenges facing these methods. Cases where drivers’ safety was jeopardized by distraction and inattention will be discussed.

Attendees will be seated in groups to facilitate computational exercises and discussion. Content will be practical in nature and is intended to support those new to the analysis of naturalistic driving data.
