Welcome to the SAFER Thursday lunch and networking seminar March 12th at 11.30-12.30!

The SAFER lunch and networking seminar week 11 is hosted by Azra Habibovic, RISE, and also Research Area Director for the SAFER’s Road User Behaviour reference group. This week Trent Victor, Volvo Cars will present key results from the recent Drive Me project. Cecilia Schülen & Jakob Hjelmåker, EDAG, will introduce us to the concept of Citybot.

Safety results from the Volvo Cars Drive-Me project.
Speaker: Trent Victor, Adj Prof, PhD, is Senior Technical Leader Crash Avoidance at Volvo Cars Safety Centre, Adjunct Professor at Chalmers University of Technology (affiliated with the SAFER Vehicle and Traffic Safety Center) in Gothenburg, Sweden. At Volvo Cars Safety Centre he provides leadership in safety-related issues in the development of crash avoidance systems, autonomous vehicles, safety impact analyses, and human factors.

This talk will present key results from the recent Drive Me project related to safety and driver behavior. It will also outline Volvo Cars approach to determining the potential safety impact of autonomous vehicles. We identify four main safety challenges, (1) development of a safety impact assessment methodology, (2) development of a pre-crash scenario-based approach, (3) definition of target levels for safety performance, and (4) development of crash avoidance performance testing methods. Thereafter, we go through how these challenges are addressed by the Volvo Cars Holistic Safety Impact Assessment Framework. We explain how we create representative conflict situations within the ODD, how we determine safety target levels for injury prevention and crash avoidance. We propose a solution to the “what is safe enough” riddle by using the Reference Driver (an attentive, skilled, experienced driver model).

Citybot – a game changer within mobility.
Speaker: Cecilia Schülen, Director Quality and Manufacturing Engineering at EDAG Engineering Scandinavia AB. Cecilia has 16 years of experience from the automotive industry with great knowledge from both the OEM and supplier aspect.
Speaker: Jakob Hjelmåker, CEO at EDAG Engineering Scandinavia AB. Jakob took over the responsibility of the local EDAG office in 2019. Jakob has acted within the automotive industry since 2004 in various roles on supplier side.

EDAG developed the Citybot concept during 2018-19 with premiere at IAA fair in Frankfurt. The idea origins from the principle of creating a multi-purpose vehicles operating within dedicated city areas. By re-using same core of vehicle for passenger transport, street maintenance, transport of goods etc, the amount of vehicles can be reduced with <80% with a more sustainable environment as a direct consequence. EDAG’s Scandinavian subsidiary will introduce us to the idea of the CityBot.
