Motorcyclists remain one of the most vulnerable groups in road traffic worldwide, accounting for a substantial share of road traffic fatalities and serious injuries. In this seminar, Maria Rizzi and Johan Strandroth will present results from the SAFER connected project Safe System Principles for MC, which explores how the Safe System approach can be applied to motorcycles and other powered two-wheelers.

This presentation introduces the development of Safe System Principles for Motorcycles, a project funded by the Swedish Transport Administration that brings together an international team of experts from academia, industry, and road safety organisations. Achieving long-term road safety targets requires a significant reduction in fatalities and serious injuries among powered two-wheelers (PTWs). The project aims to develop a science-based framework that combines human biomechanical tolerance, infrastructure design principles, and current and emerging vehicle technologies to define safe travel speeds for motorcycles. Recognising that motorcycles fulfil diverse transport needs around the world, from daily commuting to leisure and mixed-use travel, the project explores how Safe System principles can be adapted to different road environments and patterns of motorcycle use. The seminar will present the project's findings, discuss their policy and implementation implications, and outline the next steps towards validation and pilot implementation.

SAFER Thursday lunch seminars are held both at the SAFER office, Lindholmen Innovation District, building Kuggen, Lindholmsplatsen 1 or online (Teams).

• In-person attendance: Lunch will be provided at the SAFER office, starting at 11:30 AM. The seminar will then be held in a hybrid format from 12:00 to 12:45 PM. Registration is required for lunch. Please register for lunch by 12:00 PM on the Tuesday before the seminar.
• Online attendance: No registration is needed. Simply join via the Microsoft Teams link sent to all SAFER partners ahead of the event. The seminar is held in a hybrid format from 12:00 to 12:45 PM.
