SAFER Lunch seminar: Large language models – how can these help us in research?
We are excited to welcome Professor Christian Berger this week, who will talk to us about how large language models can contribute to improving traffic safety. Where do we stand today in terms of knowledge, and what opportunities and challenges lie ahead? Christian, with his extensive experience in software engineering, will provide us with an insightful overview of the current research landscape.
Professor Dr. Christian Berger is a Full Professor of Computer Science at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. He received his Ph.D. (Dr. rer. nat.) from RWTH Aachen University, Germany, in 2010. In 2012, he joined the University of Gothenburg as an Assistant Professor, was promoted to Associate Professor and Docent in 2015, and became a Full Professor in 2022.
Christian has made significant contributions to the field of autonomous systems and traffic safety. He coordinated the research project “Caroline”, which was recognized as Europe’s best self-driving vehicle during the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge, the world’s first large-scale autonomous vehicle race in urban environments. He also co-led the Chalmers Truck Team in the 2016 Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge (GCDC), focusing on cooperative driving technologies. Furthermore, he is the lead software architect behind OpenDLV (Open Driverless Vehicle) and is the Technical Lead for Software Engineering at Chalmers’ vehicle laboratory, REVERE.
In addition to his work in autonomous driving, Christian is a founding member of the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems, and Software Program (WASP) Graduate School, one of Sweden’s largest research initiatives in AI and autonomous systems. He has published over 100 scientific papers and received numerous awards for his research contributions. Christian is currently serving as the Director of Doctoral Studies at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg.
Join us for an inspiring seminar where Professor Berger will delve into the exciting potential of large language models and their role in shaping the future of traffic safety!
