Open innovation, open data, and safer roads – the Road Data Lab (RoDL) project
Speaker: Thomas Olsson, Senior Researcher, RISE

Open innovation – collaborative innovation and reducing cost by sharing assets – is practiced in open source software. With increasing reliance on and availability of data, open innovation communities around data are increasingly important. Such communities have the potential to unlock innovation areas when data from different sources are combined. In RoDL – Road Data Lab – we are building an open innovation platform, integrating different datasets to support open innovation to improve safety, quality, and planning around roads. We aim to provide both tools and methods to enable large-scale data analysis in general and machine learning in particular in addition to making data available for research and innovation. RoDL will also address non-technical issues such as establishing an efficient governance and tackling the barriers to data sharing, such as legal and privacy concerns.
We will talk about open data and open innovation, and specifically show examples of benefits and challenges from the RoDLs project partners and reference group. We report company needs and expectations on data sharing in RoDL, as well as results from our pilots currently running.
The partners in the project are RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB, AI Sweden, Lund University, Zensact, Univrses, and Chalmers Industriteknik.

AI as a tool in SAFER’s research – status and next steps
Speaker: Magnus Granström, Director at SAFER

At SAFER, we see great potential to take advantage of AI as a tool to improve our road safety research. During this year, we have carried out a number of activities with the aim of getting closer to the understanding of how we can efficiently use AI in our research to add value to our partners. Three workshops have been conducted with the targets have been to better understand the partners’ needs and form a strong strategy forward to utilize AI in the best possible way. As a result of the workshops conducted three prioritized areas have been identified that we now would like to explore further and create opportunities for the partners to turn these areas into concrete projects and solutions. Several funding opportunities have been identified and we have a strong engagement and interest from the partners to continue this work. We have also found that the availability and quality of data is crucial to be successful. SAFER has a great potential and a unique edge to be able to help meet this need since useful data already is available within the network. Magnus will present a summary of the ongoing work to utilize AI as a tool to improve our vehicle and road safety research.
