SAFER seminar: How can sound design be used to enhance the user experience in self-driving cars of the future?
Volvo Cars has been exploring this for the past two years together with RISE and Pole Position Production.
Many consumers are hesitant to ride in self-driving cars. Can they really trust that the vehicle will drive safely? And although self-driving vehicles allow passengers to use their journeys for work or entertainment, they also come with an increased risk of motion sickness. Can these concerns and other challenges be met through intelligent sound design? The Sonic Interaction in Intelligent Cars project has combined experience from vehicle design, research, and game development, resulting in the design of completely new types of audio-based user interfaces between cars and passengers.
In this online seminar, we will share our design solutions, our design guidance, and the results from user evaluations. We will also present a prototype, which provides opportunities to experience our design solutions in a real car.
The project will be presented by Fredrik Hagman, Pontus Larsson, Justyna Maculewicz, and Ali Nakisai from Volvo Cars, and Johan Fagerlönn from RISE.
The work is funded by the Strategic vehicle research and innovation programme (FFI), project ref. no. 2018-02730.
