Abstract:
This presentation addresses control intervention via braking as a way to address the safety issue resulting from over-speeding in curves. This condition leads to reduced path curvature, off-tracking to the outside of the planned curve, and a possible outcome of collision with adjacent vehicles or fixed objects or even complete road departure. This builds on several earlier papers by the presenters which use a particle reference to gain insight into the optimal control actions needed to address this problem. Attention is limited to scenarios where initial yaw instability is not a major factor contributing to path off-tracking. In this case, the limits of adhesion are reached and a suitable balance of braking and cornering forces are required to simultaneously slow the vehicle down and increase path curvature. The problem is closely related to the terminal under-steer condition, where the friction limits on the front tires are reached: this creates a stable turning limit of the vehicle, where, due to vehicle and/or friction limits, the driver is unable to achieve adequate path curvature by increasing the steering wheel angle. In these scenarios the principal options for increasing vehicle path curvature are to (a) reduce vehicle speed (b) improve the utilization of tire lateral forces, e.g. via load transfer or changing the body sideslip angle. In this paper we simultaneously address both of these approaches using control optimization and using a two-track vehicle model.
