The role of hybrid electric vehicles in achieving stringent CO2 targets - results from global energy systems modeling
SAFER has invited Maria Grahn, researcher at the department of Energy and Environment at Chalmers, to present her latest study regarding the role of internal combustion engines (ICEVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) in a carbon-constrained world (400-550 ppm by 2100).
She has developed a global cost-minimizing energy systems model (GET-RC 6.1) and analyzed how different assumptions on electricity production, as well as different costs on future vehicle technologies, may impact the cost-effective fuel/vehicle technologies over the next decades.
She found that the dominant fuel/vehicle technologies varied significantly depending on CO2 constraint, future cost of vehicle technologies (especially costs on batteries), and what electricity production technologies that are developed (carbon capture and storage, CCS, and/or concentrating solar power, CSP).
