Skilled Visuomotor Control in a Real-world Task - Explorations in the Cognitive Science of Driving

Abstract
In the control of high-speed locomotion we display the human brain's tremendous capacity to encode complex visual information and quickly transform it into coordinated motor control. We rely on this ability in everyday life, in some experts it is developed into a skill at the limit of human physiological and cognitive performance. Driving a car is an excellent example of this, a complex real-word task that is nevertheless relatively well-constrained, and performed in geometrically simple settings (which is useful for experimental work). In this presentation, I will briefly describe some of our lab's research on real and simulated driving, as well as its theoretical background and implications.
