SAFER Thursday lunch seminar: 6G for Safer and Smarter Mobility: Will Next-Generation Wireless Transform Traffic Safety and Efficiency?
Traffic safety and efficiency are at the heart of future mobility systems. Connected and automated vehicles, smart infrastructure, and intelligent traffic management all depend on reliable and timely information exchange. Today’s 4G and 5G networks can support advanced driver assistance and cooperative awareness, but the demands of fully automated, large-scale, and mixed-traffic systems may exceed their capabilities. This talk will introduce 6G – the next generation of mobile communication – and discuss how its key features can support safer and more efficient transportation. With ultra-reliable low-latency communication, centimeter-level positioning, integrated sensing, and AI-native network intelligence, 6G has the potential to enable real-time coordination among vehicles, infrastructure, and vulnerable road users. Standardization of 6G has just begun, and the future will have to decide the precise role of 6G.
This talk is presented by Prof. Erik Ström, Communication, Antennas and Optical Networks, Electrical Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology.
