Very welcome to a SAFER Thursday networking lunch and seminar! This week the topic is bike helmet rating. Jolyon Carroll, SAFER’s Research Area Director for Human Body Protection, has invited Madelen Fahlstedt from Mips for a talk to the SAFER community. 

Bike Helmet Rating – Factors that Can Influence the Rating

Today, as a complement to helmet test standards, the safety of the helmet is evaluated with different rating methods. These methods differ some and can give different results. For example, one helmet was rated as a top-rated helmet by one institute and as an average helmet by another research institute. There are several factors that influence the results, such as headform, experimental setup, choice of injury metric and how the final rating score is calculated. The presentation will discuss how these different factors affect the final results.
