SAFER Thursday lunch seminar: How We Roll
Welcome to a SAFER Thursday lunch seminar! This week we will hear a presentation on the SAFER pre-study How We Roll. My Weidel and Lennart Ochel from VTI will talk about the prototype bicycle simulator built in the project.
How We Roll
Speakers: My Weidel & Lennart Ochel, VTI
When trying to study bicycling in simulators the bicycling experience is often compromised by complicated technical solutions. By using simulators that do not resemble the real experience we cannot be sure to get a representative behavior in bicycle studies. To focus on the bicycling, we took a step back from engineering and built the simulator with an innovative approach. At this seminar we present the prototype built in the project How We Roll, VTIs new simulator offers bicycling on a two-meter-wide free roller, using virtual reality or a big screen. The simulator is movable, built inhouse and has three rolls, two connected with a chain. And driven by the speed of the bicyclist.
Speed and position are measured and presented in the virtual reality world. To make sure the bicyclist feels safe a safety system is also available. In this lunch seminar we will present the advantage and possibilities of using a free roller as well as the limitations and the big challenges.
