Welcome to our final Thursday seminar of 2022. This session is entirely devoted to the project In the Hub and SAFER has invited researchers from Scania and RISE to give a talk on their main insights from this project.

In the Hub: designing for future interactions between human operators and automated heavy vehicles using natural interaction technologies
Speakers:
Yanqing Zhang. Senior human factor specialist and project leader, Scania
Johan Fagerlönn. Senior researcher, RISE Research Institutes of Sweden

The use of natural interaction technologies, such as voice and gesture interaction, to facilitate collaboration between humans and automated heavy vehicles has been largely unexplored. In the Hub is a 2.5-year collaborative project among Scania, RISE, Boliden Mineral, and Icemakers that is funded by FFI. It has investigated how to incorporate emerging interaction technologies into autonomous transport systems to facilitate efficient and engaging experiences in hubs, such as logistics centers and mine sites. The work has focused on two cases: human workers interacting with automated vehicles while in another machine and unprotected human workers interacting with vehicles in close proximity. Using a user-centered design approach, we have conducted research to understand user needs, create concepts, build prototypes, and perform evaluations with end users. In general, this research has shown that using natural interaction technologies has great potential to improve user experience during such interactions. In this presentation, we will share some design solutions and the main insights that have emerged from our work.
