SAFER Thursday Lunch seminar with Johan Karlsson (Cognitian) on ADAPTIN & SupportIN and Erik Frisk (Linköping University) on Slim2real
Johan Karlsson (Cognitian), project manager for both ADAPTIN and SupportIN, will present results and insights from two projects tackling the same core challenge from different angles: how do we create driver support that is actually used—and delivers maximum safety benefit?
In ADAPTIN, we have mapped recurring scenarios in fatal crashes involving driver impairment due to fatigue, distraction, or alcohol/drugs. What happens in the critical moments close to impact—and how could smarter interventions disrupt that trajectory? You will hear concrete proposals for making automatic braking and lane-keeping adaptive, responding to the driver’s condition to help prevent the most severe outcomes.
In SupportIN, the focus shifts to user experience: for driver assistance systems to be used, they must feel comprehensible, helpful, and trustworthy, and be clear about their limitations. We show what users appear to want—such as clear visualisation of system constraints in the current context (e.g., missing lane markings, crests/curve radii, sensors impaired by contamination) and support that aligns with the driver’s intent. The outcome is a set of actionable ideas for keeping systems like ACC and lane keeping active as far as technically possible, without creating uncertainty.

Sim2Real – a new platform from our partner Linköping University - designed to make the step from simulation to real-world testing for autonomous vehicles smoother and safer. The platform connects realistic simulation environments with physical miniature vehicles, enabling hands-on testing of vehicle dynamics, sensing, traffic rules, and interaction between multiple vehicles.
You will also get an introduction to the shared software architecture that runs seamlessly in both the virtual and real setup supporting efficient development, verification, and teaching, without unnecessary reinvention between environments.
Presenter: Erik Frisk, Linköping University
Practical Information
SAFER Thursday lunch seminars are held both at the SAFER office, Chalmers Campus Lindholmen, building Saga, room Okeanos or online (Teams).

- In-person attendance: Lunch will be provided at the SAFER office, Chalmers Campus Lindholmen, starting at 11:30 AM. The seminar will then be held in a hybrid format from 12:00 to 13:00 PM. Registration is required for lunch. Please register for lunch by 12:00 PM on the Tuesday before the seminar.
- Online attendance: No registration is needed. Simply join via the Microsoft Teams link sent to all SAFER partners ahead of the event. The seminar is held in a hybrid format from 12:00 to 12:45 PM.
