Operational Safety for Autonomous Transport Solutions
Speaker: Per Johannessen, Safety Manager, Volvo Group

This talk will focus on how safety of Volvo Group’s first commercial autonomous truck transport solution is addressed. Safety is addressed in several areas; the vehicles, the coordination of the transport solution, an E-stop system, the infrastructure at the site and the operators involved. For the automotive industry, this is a larger scope than normal development as it also includes workplace safety.

Safety I and Safety II
Speaker: Tejas Chandran, Research Engineer, Autoliv

Safety management has traditionally been “find and fix,” where a past failure or an identified risk is solved. This method often overlooks human performance variability and assumes failure or mishaps are the results of non-compliance with rules or procedures. Erik Hollnagel argues that this does not explain how performance variability almost always makes things happen correctly or uneventfully. To understand which direction one should take to improve safety, we need to understand why things go right and make that happen again — Safety II. This talk will summarize the two safeties to instigate (or provoke?) a discussion on how we can use this more in our fields of work.
