Abstract
A revolution is a sudden, radical or complete change. It’s antecedents can be philosophical, social, economic or technological. A revolution is often unexpected, resulting in chaos and human and economic casualties. In this presentation, Narelle proposes that the introduction of e-scooters shares many of the aspects of a revolution. She will discuss the outcomes of the introduction of e-scooters from a range of perspectives and speculate regarding their future.

Professor Narelle Haworth holds the MAIC-QUT Chair in Road Safety at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia. She has led road safety research projects for more than 35 years and has long-standing links with Sweden. Indeed, her most highly cited publication was co-authored with Professor Claes Tingvall during his time in Australia. During her long career, Narelle has worked in almost all areas of road safety but her passion is for understanding and improving the safety of vulnerable road users. Recently, the focus of her research has moved from bicycle to e-scooter safety.  Her observational studies of e-scooter use identified the greater prevalence of risky and illegal behaviours of shared, compared to private e-scooter riders. Narelle developed a new risk matrix for e-mobility devices combining maximum riding speed and operating environment, which has informed national and state policy papers.  She is currently leading a 3-year longitudinal study of e-scooter riders which examines how safety and usage patterns change with increasing rider experience.  Narelle is also evaluating the impacts of new laws on where e-scooters can be ridden and the applicable speed limits in Queensland for the state government.
