Transport and Health in the 21st Century
Welcome to the SAFER seminar with Prof. Geetam Tiwari, TRIPP, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, India.
Thursday June 21st, 11:00-12:00 at SAFER, Lindholmspiren 3 (Göteborg)
Moving comfortably in cities has defined the urban space in modern cities. In the first half of the 20th century, the car had a major influence on the development of mobility, infrastructure and urban planning. The car embodied the key defining attributes of modernity: freedom, mobility, democracy, material prosperity, comfort, masculinity. While the car has become the main mode of transport in North America and Western Europe, it continues to be used by less than 15% of the households in Indian cities. Almost a century later mobility comfort has to be redefined. The conflict between the needs of pedestrians and car mobility has become the main concern in creating healthy cities. Car users have become much safer inside the car with the advancement of technology. However, pedestrians continue to be the most vulnerable road users in most cities, regardless of income and region. The 21st century is the urban century when more people will live in urban areas as compared to rural areas. Another key defining feature of the 21st century is the reality of global warming and the increase of green house gases from human activity including transport activity. Modern liveable cities require a safe pedestrian environment as well as low GHG emissions from the transport sector. When pedestrians and bicyclists are given the highest priority these objectives are achieved both in the South and the North. In the South to ensure equity and in the North to ensure health of the citizens.
