Vulnerable Road User safety: Challenges for the next decade
In addition to vehicle design and enforcement, city and street designs are likely to play a dominant in promoting vulnerable road user safety in the coming decades.
Vulnerable road users
The vulnerable road users represent a high risk populati on since they are unprotected in road vehicle accidents. Each year about 100,000 population are killed in vehicle traffic accidents in India and China, respectively. Of which more than 60% of reported traffic fatalities in India are pedestrian, bicyclists, motorized twowheelers, and 59% in China.
In the EU about 6,000 pedestrians and 2,000 bicyclists are killed and 90,000 seriously injured each year. The relative frequency of pedestrian fatalities in EU is 18%, and 13% in Sweden, which reflects a big difference comparing with situation in India and China.
The visit of Prof Dinesh Mohan aims to develop knowledge about traffic safety of vulnerable road users in India and China for a better understanding of the occurrence, distribution, engineering and human factors of the VRUs accidents and for comparison with the facts in Europe.
A study will serve as identification of existing problems with accidents and potential for improvements of traffic safety in Asian countries with perspective of vision zero in traffic safety.
