Erik Ström is heading the Division of Communications, Antennas, and Optical Networks at Chalmers University. He will present 802.11p/bd versus 4G/5G/6G — The continuing saga of wireless standards for V2X, Episode IV.

Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) rely on V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication, enabling vehicles and other road users to interact with each other and with road infrastructure. This talk provides a brief review of the latest advancements in wireless technologies that are pivotal to V2X communication, namely IEEE 802.11bd and 5G/6G. We will trace the evolution from the established 802.11p to IEEE 802.11bd, detailing its enhancements in the physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layers, which underpin the European ITS-G5 and the American DSRC standards. Furthermore, the talk will examine the role of cellular networks from 4G to 6G in supporting Cellular V2X (C-V2X), laying out the groundwork for an informed comparison. The ongoing debate between the use of IEEE 802.11p/bd and cellular technologies (4G/5G/6G) for V2X communication has been clouded by commercial interests, often steering away from objective analysis. This presentation aims to limit the noise by providing an unbiased view of these competing technologies, their merits, and their limitations.
