Welcome to a SAFER Thursday lunch seminar: Occlusion- and Risk-aware Autonomous Vehicles through Reachability Analysis
Truls Nyberg, Industrial PhD Student at Scania Autonomous Transport Solutions, will share his expertise on occlusion- and risk-aware autonomous vehicles through reachability analysis. With a strong academic foundation from Linköping University and current research at the Division of Robotics, Perception, and Learning at KTH, Truls focuses on situational awareness, risk-aware decision-making, and motion planning for autonomous systems.
In this seminar, he will present his recent work, "Risk-aware Motion Planning for Autonomous Vehicles with Safety Specifications".
What happens when an autonomous vehicle can’t see what’s ahead—but still needs to act? In this talk, we explore how AVs can drive safely and decisively, even when parts of the world are hidden or uncertain. I’ll present recent research on risk- and occlusion-aware motion planning, showing how vehicles can predict what might be behind blind corners, reason about the worst-case without getting stuck in it, and maintain safety in complex, real-world traffic. At the core is a reachability-based framework that lets AVs track occluded regions over time, anticipate possible hazards, and plan accordingly. We’ll see how this enables high-speed driving, smarter urban behavior, and the use of V2X communication to "share the unseen" between vehicles. Finally, I’ll show how this comes together in a planning framework that doesn’t just react to surprises—but prepares for them.

SAFER Thursday lunch seminars are held both at the SAFER office, Lindholmspiren 3A (second floor), and online via Microsoft Teams.
- In-person attendance: Lunch will be provided at the SAFER office, Lindholmen Science Park, starting at 11:30 AM. The seminar will then be held in a hybrid format from 12:00 to 12:45 PM. Registration is required for lunch. Please register for lunch by 12:00 PM on the Tuesday before the seminar.
- Online attendance: No registration is needed. Simply join via the Microsoft Teams link sent to all SAFER partners ahead of the event. The seminar is held in a hybrid format from 12:00 to 12:45 PM.
