Passenger safety in shared mobility
Join us at SAFER's Research Day on September 18th for a panel discussion titled " Shared Mobility – How can we ensure passenger safety? This session will address the critical challenge of ensuring passenger safety in shared mobility, with a special focus on the use of essential safety equipment such as safety belts and child car seats.
As shared mobility continues to grow, studies indicate that safety practices, like safety belt use, tend to be less consistent in shared vehicles compared to personal cars, as well as the use of child car seats. This discussion will bring together experts from the automotive industry, research, shared mobility sectors, behavioral science, and more, to explore how we can encourage the consistent use of safety equipment and protect passengers in the best possible way. We will also examine how design innovations and effective communication can improve user compliance, particularly in non-traditional seating arrangements and automated driving scenarios.
Some examples of questions we will address:
- Strategies to ensure all passengers use necessary protection in shared mobility.
- Innovations to make seatbelts more attractive and comfortable for regular use.
- Addressing unconventional seating behaviors and postures that challenge traditional safety systems.
- Current practices for car seats in shared mobility – are they fixed installations or available for rent?
- Insights from users on in-car safety in shared mobility.
- Ideas for increasing safety equipment usage.
- Industry signals and trends related to passenger safety in shared mobility.
The discussion will aim to incorporate various perspectives on how we can ensure that all passengers are adequately protected, regardless of vehicle type or context. We have invited external guests to bring in viewpoints from outside our usual traffic safety community, ensuring a broad and valuable discussion.
Panelists:
- Anton Wall, Commercial Director, Axkid
- Hans Arby, Digital Systems, Department of Mobility and Systems, RISE
- Emma Tiger, Parenting influencer advocating for child safety in mobility
- Helena Strömberg, Design & Human Factors, Chalmers University
- Karin Ryberg, Sustainable Travel, Västtrafik
- Katarina Bohman, Volvo Cars Safety Centre
- Olof Holmgren, KINTO Share / Flex
Additionally, Katarina Bohman from Volvo Cars will present findings from the "Car Passenger Protection – To the Next Level" project, which has advanced safety knowledge and assessment tools for real-world seatbelt interactions, addressing challenges like diverse populations, increased car automation, and shared mobility. The project has contributed significantly to SAFER's HBM platform, linking human factors with injury protection to maintain Sweden's leadership in road safety research.
We warmly invite you to bring your expertise to this important dialogue and help shape the future of passenger safety in shared mobility.

About the panelists
Anton Wall is a leader in the children's and baby industry with a background from numerous executive roles, currently Deputy CEO for Axkid, Sweden's only car child seat brand, focusing on sales, marketing, and expansion.
Emma Tiger, Parenting influencer advocating for child safety in mobility. Emma is a mother of four and will provide us with the perspective of parenting on shared mobility.
Hans Arby is a senior researcher at RISE Research Institute of Sweden with an expertise in shared mobility as part of city development and focusing on business model and eco system innovation and governance. Prior to RISE he ran the start-up UbiGo that launched one of the first commercial, subscription based MaaS (Mobility as a Service) operations in Stockholm.
Helena Strömberg is a senior lecturer at Division Design & Human Factors who studies the role that design of products and services can play for enabling sustainable everyday activities. For the panel she contributes experiences from several studies concerning shared mobility and behaviour change, as well as how design can be used to support desired behaviours.
Karin Ryberg, Strategist in the Campaign and Influence department at Västtrafik. Works on influencing efforts to increase sustainable travel, both at the national and local levels, as well as finding new solutions where public transport is extended with the help of other shared solutions, in my case primarily micromobility.
Katarina Bohman is a Technical Expert in biomechanics at Volvo Cars, and the perspectives on the car manufacturer's opportunities to improve safety for shared vehicles will be highlighted in the panel.
Olof Holmgren has worked with shared vehicles for 15 years and was a key figure in building up Sunfleet. He now leads and develops KINTO Share in Sweden, offering a wide range of smart car-sharing services.
Welcome!
