New SAFER associated projects about autonomous drive

There are several new autonomous driving projects associated under the SAFER research umbrella.

Autonomous drive and digitalisation is one of the key research areas at SAFER. The new associated projects are:

ADAS&Me (Adaptive ADAS to support incapacitated drivers Mitigate Effectively risks through tailor made HMI under automation)
The aim of this project is to develop ADAS that incorporate driver / rider state, situational / environmental context and adaptive HMI to automatically hand over different levels of automation and thus ensure safer and more efficient road usage for all vehicle types (conventional and electric car, truck, bus, motorcycle). SAFER’s partner VTI is leading this project and Autoliv is going to test their steering wheel for human monitoring.

Automation for increased accessibility
The project aims to answer the question in what ways autonomous transport solutions will create value for people with varying needs and how we can model the benefits for future innovations. Human factors involved in interactions with automated transport system including vehicle safety aspects are important for SAFER’s research.

Chronos
Chronos is about making the first step to create a test platform for automation and ICT at AstaZero. The platform will be open for test and validation (certification) of coming autonomous functionality. It will be possible to make validation of vehicle functionality through controlled exposure to potentially dangerous scenarios possible. The ICT test/research will include cyber security and reliability, high efficiency, high safety and security and allow flexibility towards customers and suppliers, industry and academia. The unique cutting edge test facility will make project/experiments possible and shorten time to market. The aim is to offer tests at the proving ground as a service! For SAFER, it is important to develop a core method to help partners to proceed in the area.

C2VC (Complete Combination Vehicle Control with automated reconfiguration)
With automated transports, also the definition/combining of different vehicle units e.g. truck, dolly, trailer link into a vehicle combination will be automated. The project aims to solve the problem of how to automatically reconfigure the vehicle motion functionality control software as the vehicle combination is adapted for a specific transport mission. Vehicle dynamics focus (e.g. handling control of complex vehicle configurations) is connected to safety, hence this is an important research to make autonomous combination vehicles safe.

HF Auto (Human Factors for Automation)
HF Auto bridges the gap between engineers and psychologists through a multidisciplinary research and training programme. The project combines engineering domains such as simulator hardware, traffic flow theory, control theory, and mathematical driver modelling with psychological domains such as human action and perception, cognitive modelling, vigilance, distraction, psychophysiology, and mode/situation awareness, to optimally address the interdisciplinary domain of human factors.

Sweden4Platooning
The objective of the project is to demonstrate feasibility of CACC (Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Contro) on public roads, with trucks from Scania and Volvo at the haulage company Schenker. Furthermore, platooning (lateral and longitudinal control of trucks) will be demonstrated. The objective is to make V2V communication viable for commercial vehicles and thereby connective safety. This is the first project for cross brand communication (V2V) and applications among SAFER partners; an important enabler for connected safety.
