DART Development of a Rear-End Target

The design of two rear-end targets intended for testing of automotive safety functions are described. Technical requirements related to physical properties such as size, weight, and detection characteristics have been collected to guide the design of the target. Examples of traffic scenarios where the target can be used are given. A brief survey of existing rear-end targets is presented. The design of the foam and the rib-balloon rear-end targets are described. These targets have been tested during physical tests and most of the requirements have been validated. Based on experience from the performed tests, suggestions for improvements and future work have been gathered. Drawings describing the targets are given in Annex A. Annex B gives assembly instructions including practical hints.
