Functional Safety in Systems of Road Vehicles

Architectures for communication between road vehicles and road infrastructure are under development. The new applications made possible by advanced communication create new opportunities and new safety challenges. The functional safety aspects so far considered for single vehicles have to be considered also for cooperative systems of road vehicles. The report is the result of a study identifying needs and giving examples of some models which can be applied. Functional safety is one of the competence areas of SAFER, the Vehicle and Traffic Safety Centre at Chalmers. Functional safety in cooperative systems of road vehicles has been identified by SAFER and its industrial partners as a potential research topic. SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden and the Victoria Institute have carried out this study of the topic of functional safety and systems of road vehicles. This report is based on a series of workshops and with contributions from several authors.
