Adaptive Interventions for Impaired Driving – a new SAFER partner project
Every year, tragic fatal accidents occur on the roads where drivers are impaired by fatigue, distraction, or alcohol and drugs. But what if vehicles could adapt to the driver's condition and intervene before it's too late? This is exactly what the new research project ADAPTIN – Adaptive Interventions for Impaired Driving aims to solve!
By analysing common scenarios in fatal accidents where impaired driving has been a critical factor, ADAPTIN will map out how technology can support drivers in critical situations. The project focuses on developing adaptive safety functions – for example, adjusting automatic braking and lane-keeping systems in real-time based on the driver’s condition.
This means that future cars may not only respond to road conditions but also to the human factor. The systems can become more sensitive if the driver shows signs of fatigue or impairment, helping to prevent accidents before they happen.
The project is led by Cognitian AB, funded by the Swedish Transport Administration’s Skyltfonden, and will run from January to June 2025. The ultimate goal? Concrete proposals on how adaptive safety measures can be implemented to save lives on the road.
