Automation and 5G is being tested at AstaZero

Jul, 12 2018

In this experiment the cars cross the intersection 'tight' without colliding with high safety margins, even with much higher safety than in conventional traffic.
As the cars approach the intersection, they become aware of each other, even though they are not in direct contact either through visibility, sensors or wifi networks. Instead, the 5G network, which is used at AstaZero proving ground, is connected with the cars and mobile phones. The 5G network has a server that very rapidly can provide data on traffic rules, other road users or other important tasks to the cars. The autonomous cars then individually agree on a driving order through the intersection by communicating with each other. After that, each vehicle adjusts its individual speed so that they can meet tight at the intersection without risk of a collision.
