Autonomous cars in SAFER’s high profile project L3Pilot demonstrated

Sep, 24 2019

For two days, the project team within the large European project L3Pilot gathered at SAFER in Gothenburg. One of the highlights of the meeting was when the participants got to know some of the project's self-driving cars. The Volvo cars that were demonstrated had several different degrees of automation. L3Pilot is one of SAFER's currently largest and most significant projects.

It is the European automotive industry that has joined forces to test and evaluate automated technologies in real traffic in eleven European countries. The project focuses on large-scale piloting of SAE level 3 functions, with additional assessment of some level 4 functions. The tested functions cover a wide range from parking to overtaking and urban intersection driving. These tests will provide valuable data for evaluation of technical aspects, user acceptance, driving and travel behaviour and impact on traffic and society. All in all 23 different features will be tested. With its large coverage of driving situations, L3Pilot is the first project worldwide demonstrating and testing a comprehensive setup of automated driving functions.
