Dr. Jonas Jansson, VTI, joins SAFER's Board

Jan, 02 2025

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Jonas Jansson, Head of the Traffic and Road User Department at the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI), as a new member of SAFER's Board of Directors. Jonas has an impressive research career, holding a degree from Linköping University.

"SAFER is an outstanding network, and I am excited to collaborate with partners from various organisations and sectors to initiate activities that contribute to the sustainable transformation of the transport system," says Jonas.

With a background in driver support systems and vehicle dynamics, Jonas contributed to the development of Volvo's automatic emergency braking system during his time at Volvo Cars (1999–2007). His doctoral thesis focused on pre-crash braking systems and automatic control. Today, his research interests span diverse areas, including the integration of road safety with sustainable mobility, remote operation of connected automated vehicles, electromobility, and powered two-wheeler safety.

Jonas is passionate about advancing research in vehicle safety and driver support, areas he believes should remain top priorities for SAFER. He is also committed to highlighting issues related to alcohol, drug use, and traffic medicine, with connections to vehicle technology. Furthermore, Jonas emphasises the importance of vehicle electrification and the development of virtual testing and evaluation of injury mechanisms, particularly for vulnerable road users and new vehicle types.

Jonas succeeds Professor Astrid Linder on the board. We look forward to working with Jonas to further strengthen SAFER as a leading research platform for traffic safety.
