FATAL – Making rural roads smarter and safer

Jun, 19 2025

A new partner project with a dramatic name – but a life-saving mission – is now rolling: FATAL – Improved traffic safety at rural 2+1 intersections through data-driven insights and smart infrastructure. Don’t be fooled by the name – this project is all about preventing fatal accidents on Sweden’s rural roads.

2+1 roads, with center barriers and alternating overtaking lanes, are a Swedish safety success story. But where these roads meet smaller roads – at intersections the risks go up significantly. Speed differences, visibility issues and risky behaviours all contribute to an elevated crash risk.

Enter FATAL – with sensors, data, and a desire to understand
Using smart 3D-based sensors embedded in the infrastructure, this project detects and analyses road user behaviour to identify what causes danger at these junctions. The goal is to develop a method that recognises risky patterns early and gives traffic authorities the tools to intervene proactively, both for existing and future roads. This is about turning data into insights – and insights into action – for areas that are often overlooked, yet critical to road safety.

The project is funded by the Swedish Transport Administration and has a budget of 2.46 MSEK. Partners are VTI and Viscando.

We wish the project team best of luck in this important mission!
