FUSE4CCAM aims to make Europe’s road safety data more useful

Oct, 27 2026

Europe already has huge amounts of data on vehicles, traffic, crashes, infrastructure and automated driving. The challenge is that much of it sits in different places, in different formats and under different access conditions. The new EU project FUSE4CCAM wants to make more of that knowledge actually usable and, ultimately, contribute to safer mobility for all road users.

Today, large volumes of data are generated through field operational tests, connected vehicles, infrastructure and traffic systems. But when information is stored in separate systems and cannot easily be combined, it becomes harder to compare results, assess safety effects and learn from each other. In practice, that also means development can move more slowly than it needs to.

FUSE4CCAM – Federated Unified Services advancing next generation Data Exchange for CCAM – aims to change that. The project is developing a common European framework for data exchange where data can remain with the organisation that owns it, while becoming easier to discover, understand and use together with other data. So, rather than creating one huge central database, the idea is to enable trusted and practical exchange between different actors.

What does this mean for road safety?
The real value is not the platform itself, but what becomes possible when data can be used more effectively. FUSE4CCAM will support more comparable analysis of crash risk, evaluation of the safety effectiveness of ADAS and other safety systems, and the development of new safety indicators.

For road users, this can ultimately mean better evidence for safer vehicles, smarter safety systems and more informed decisions. In short: better use of data can help us make better safety decisions.

A European team effort
And this is definitely not the kind of challenge one organisation can solve alone. FUSE4CCAM brings together a broad European consortium spanning research, industry, technology, cities and mobility. The project is coordinated by ERTICO, with partners including Chalmers, TNO, RWTH Aachen, DLR, IDIADA, AVL, YUNEX and several other European organisations. The City of Hamburg and Valeo are associated partners. At Chalmers, Robert Thomson is the project contact.

The project is funded through Horizon Europe, has a total budget of just over €3.8 million, and runs from October 2026 to September 2029.

SAFER contributes with network and real-world relevance
FUSE4CCAM is now also connected to SAFER’s project portfolio. Here, SAFER can contribute with something that is just as important as the technical development itself: bringing in perspectives from safety researchers, vehicle industry and public authorities, and helping validate whether the project’s use cases are genuinely relevant to the people and organisations expected to use the results.

Through SAFER, the project can also reach Swedish stakeholders beyond the European consortium and create new connections between research, industry and the public sector. The ambition is, among other things, to showcase concrete use cases for federated safety data and share results through SAFER’s network and activities.

That is probably where some of the strongest collaboration value lies: making sure advanced solutions do not stay inside the project, but become understandable, useful and relevant for those who develop systems, make decisions and work to create safer traffic.
