A new docent in the SAFER community: Anna Vadeby

Jan, 29 2020

With years of work behind her within academia and as a senior researcher, Anna Vadeby is ready to take the next step in her career. A gathering of 35 people braved the rainy Gothenburg weather to hear the docent lecture of Anna Vadeby, VTI, this Wednesday afternoon. The room was filled with anticipation, and even several minutes before Anna started speaking, the room grew completely quiet. Angela Hillemyr, head of the department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences Chalmers, broke the silence by announcing the start of the lecture. Vadeby readily faced the crowd.

Vadeby’s main area of expertise is statistical analysis and evaluation in traffic safety and lately she has mainly been focused on the topic of speed management in road traffic. A grand part of her research is involved with “Vision Zero”, where the main goal is that no one should be killed or seriously injured in road traffic. According to Vadeby, system designers and road users share the responsibility for making “Vision Zero” a reality. Vadeby’s own work has centered around the relationships between speed and crashes. Examples are evaluation of speed limits and studies of how speed cameras effect the behavior of road users. Her work is based on roads all over Sweden, often with a focus on speed, and speed limits, adapted to the safety classification of the roads.

Anna Vadeby is driven by the fact that her work is beneficial for society. The link between applied research and science is very important to her trough out her work. Going forward, her goal is to continue to increase the knowledge of traffic safety but also working with international and national collaborations on the topic. Her hopes for collaborations with Chalmers are, for instance, to promote a stronger link between Master- and PhD students at Chalmers and VTI, extend her activities within the Vision Zero Academy, hosted by SAFER. Another idea is to facilitate interested partners and stakeholders in future research projects, both nationally and internationally.
