New EU project targets long-term injury prevention in road safety

Jun, 09 2025

A new Horizon Europe project, IMPROVA – Injury Mitigation to PROmote Vision-zero Achievement, is now underway with the goal of addressing one of road safety’s most overlooked areas: the long-term consequences (LTC) of traffic accidents.

While traditional traffic safety efforts focus on preventing fatalities and reducing crash numbers, IMPROVA expands the scope by aiming to understand, predict, and mitigate the physical and psychological impacts that injuries can have long after the crash.

The project will:

  • Develop a predictive formula to estimate LTC likelihood immediately after a crash.
  • Improve human body models (HBMs) to better reflect LTC-relevant injury mechanisms.
  • Create virtual testing procedures for future use by industry and assessment bodies
  • Share open-access results to support global progress in road safety

By focusing on long-term injury outcomes, IMPROVA aims to redefine safety success – making sure surviving a crash doesn’t mean living with life-altering injuries.

The project runs from June 2024 to May 2028 and is including the SAFER partner Autoliv.
